Immigration Firm Shut Down

High profile immigration solicitors Malik Law Chambers has been shut down by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). The company that has two branches - one in London and one in Birmingham has been shut down at short notice due to their dealings. The case is something of a shock as the company has a high profile due to its large history of dealing with immigration cases - Dr Malik's Facebook page notes that he has been involved with over 18,000 cases since 1995.

In a statement released by the authority, they noted: There is reason to suspect dishonesty on the part of Dr Akbar Ali Malik and on the part of Mr Imtiaz Ali, the firm's managers, in connection with the firm's business (Paragraph 32(1)(d)(i) of Schedule 2 to the Administration of Justice Act [1985]).

That Malik Law Chambers and Dr Akbat [sic] Ali Malik, as a manager of the firm, have failed to comply with the SRA Principles 2011 (Paragraph 32(1)(a) of Schedule 2 to the Administration of Justice Act [1985]).

The decision is highly unusual and certainly poses questions as to why Dr Malik and his associates were allowed to trade for quite so long considering the seriousness of the case against them. Malik though is no stranger to controversy. In 2006 he won £20,000 worth of damages from The Sunday Times - though it must be noted that he also faced a reprimand for his actions after an undercover reporter from the newspaper exposed Dr Malik for his actions and advice. It is not clear at this stage whether the recent shutdown was as a result of similar actions or something else entirely.

Why Were They Shut Down?

At this stage, it is unknown exactly what Malik Law Chambers have been accused of, but the seriousness of the punishment would appear to indicate systemic and widespread abuse throughout the company's practices. Recently the company was criticised for putting forward obviously bogus and seriously problematic arguments during a judicial review. It is clear that whatever they have done, it warrants a serious investigation and clearly the SRA is not planning to allow Dr Malik to trade whilst an investigation is ongoing.

The worry now is for the clients of the business. Fortunately, many of them will be able to take on the services of alternative law firms, but there will be some who will be hugely affected by the shutdown.
