The UK point based system was introduced to regulate immigration from outside the European Economic Area. Immigration from the EU is almost unrestricted given the free movement obtainable within EU member states. It was therefore important that a system was evolved regulate migration figures from other countries.
The point based system is designed to award points for such things as defined by the home office. For example, to be eligible to enter into the UK on a particular route, the government will then list out their criteria for granting you entry and allocate points on that basis. An immigration route like Tier 1 Entrepreneur requires applicants to score a total of 95 points. Meeting the financial requirements attracts 25 points. If the money is held in a regulated financial institution, that is an additional 25 points. If you meet the English language and maintenance funds requirement, you would have scored 10 points each.
