Is It Easy To Find Jobs For Dependent Visa Holders In The UK?

Many of the UK’s Points-based system (PBS) visa routes offer the option of bringing dependents to the country. While there are usually strict rules governing the work rights of the visa holder, these rules are often rather more relaxed for the dependents they bring with them. So, if you are coming to the UK as a dependent visa holder, or you are already here, you may be wondering what kind of work you can do. In this article, we will give you an overview of the scope of jobs which can be done by dependent visa holders in the UK.

What Is A Dependent Visa?

A dependent visa is given to the dependents of a points-based system (PBS) visa holder (such as Tier 1 and Tier 2 visas). This visa is normally given the same length of stay as the main visa holder but gives somewhat different options when it comes to certain areas, such as work. For instance, a Tier 2 General Visa holder must work for a Tier 2 Sponsor Licence holder but their dependent does not have to. This means in many ways, the dependent actually has far better work options than the main visa holder.

Dependent visas are offered as a way for a points-based system (PBS) migrant to keep their family together while also giving them the option of moving to the UK to live and work. While the dependent visa offers generous options in terms of work rights, it is time-limited in the same way the main visa is, so you may need to make this a consideration of the work you intend to take on. You will also need to make your prospective employer aware you are in the UK on a visa so they can accurately check your right to work in the country.

What Are The Work Rights Of Dependent Visa Holders In The UK?

As we’ve noted previously, dependent visa holders have very flexible work options in the UK. They can work freely, for any employer they choose. This is one of the biggest benefits of a dependent visa and allows for households to have multiple incomes, an option that is vital given the cost of living in the UK.

Employers will need to check your right to work in the UK, but this is generally a very straightforward process that protects them against potential legal consequences. Apart from this, working in the UK is very straightforwardand many UK based employers are more than happy to take on dependent visa holders. Due to the diverse nature of the British workforce, you will find that most businesses are extremely open to applicants from all over the world, often utilising their specific skills (such as additional languages) to help in their business. As business becomes ever more global, a diverse workforce has some very unique benefits.

What Jobs Are Suited To Dependent Visa Holders?

There is no specific type of job best suited to dependent visa holders, as you can work freely in the UK. You will not need to look for anything special in your job search as you can apply for any job. If you have specialist skills then clearly looking at those sectors is likely to be more fruitful - this is especially true if you speak more than one language. As we’ve noted, many businesses are now global and having multilingual staff can help to give them a very distinct advantage when it comes to opening up new business avenues.

There may be some employers who are not as receptive to taking on dependent visa holders, which is usually because the visa holder may not be planning to live in the UK for the long-term. It may be a case of trial and error when it comes to applications, as you may find there are employers who are very receptive to the idea of taking on visa holders. To try and minimise issues, it is probably best to ensure you make it clear you are in the UK on a dependent visa when you make your application. This will save you attending interviews with employers who are not open to the idea of taking on a dependent visa holder.

Where Can I Find A Suitable Job For A Dependent Visa Holder?

There are no specific jobs or sectors that are suited more for visa holders, you are free to work anywhere. In order to give yourself the best chance of success, we would suggest that you ensure that any application that you make is clear about your visa situation. It is also prudent to cast your net as widely as possible by applying for a number of jobs. While you may see a job advertised that you think is perfect, you can always turn other jobs down if you are offered more than one. By applying for a number of jobs, you can greatly improve your chances of a successful search.

The best way of looking for jobs these days is undoubtedly online. There are a huge number of job sites available in the UK that offer literally hundreds of thousands of jobs each day. Many of these allow you to refine certain filters (such as salary and location) and many even offer you the option of making a direct application online. These sites are all available from the comfort of your home and are by far the best way of searching for a job. Many jobs will even specify whether a company specifically wants visa holders (many will do).
