How Can I Pass The English Visa Requirement In My Application?

One of the biggest parts of the eligibility for almost all of the UK's visa routes is a competent level of English. Assessors need to be confident that your English language skills are at the level required for you to successfully live and work in the UK. Language has become a bigger issue in the UK over recent years as the Conservative government seek to reduce migration and concentrate it to skilled migration.

With this in mind, the eligibility criteria are quite stringent and there isn't much room for manoeuvre. Though if you have some English it is relatively easy to locate courses that can help you improve your English skills so that you can get to the minimum requirements and beyond.

What Are The Minimum Requirements?

As set out in the eligibility criteria, you will need to be able to pass the CEFR level B1 or have an academic qualification that is equal to a bachelor's or master's degree or a PhD.

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) was created by the Council of Europe as a standardised way of assessing language examinations. It is widely used as the stick by which people are measured as it is easily transferable. It consists of 6 levels A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 & C2. These levels match a framework laid out and give an indication as to the level of the speaker. The B1 level required means that you have the ability to express yourself in at least a limited way.

There is also a list of countries (mainly Commonwealth ones) that are exempted from the requirements above and are ideal for those who are travelling to the UK from them.

Fortunately English is one of, if not the most widely spoken language in the World. There are numerous learning providers who can help you improve your language skills often for free. There are also some fantastic mobile phone applications such as Duolingo and Memrise that add a layer of gamification making the learning fun.

There is also a vast library of films that offer you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the language. Even better you could visit the country and speak with locals and get a real feel for how the Brits actually speak English. Immersion really is the ideal way to learn and it is something you should take advantage of if you can.

Many of the learning providers that help you to gain the CEFR level also provide excellent course materials to help you to improve your knowledge and understanding of the English language.
